Sochi Olympic medals 9 years later. „I knew it,“ Soukalová said
On Saturday special celebrations took place in front of the crowded Vysočina Arena in NMNM. The Czech Women Relay team from OWG Sochi 2014 received their bronze medals.
Nine years ago, the Czech relay finished fourth behind Ukraine, Russia and Norway. The Russian team however was later disqualified for doping.
All four relay members – Gabriela Soukalová, Veronika Vítková, Eva Puskarčíková and Jitka Landová – have wrapped up their careers during the waiting years. “I am really glad that the girls received their medals in Nove Mesto na Morave in front of their home crowd. It is a great satisfaction for being in the front line of the fight against Russian doping within the IBU,” said Jiří Hamza, President of Czech Biathlon and Vice President of the International Biathlon Union.
The story of the women relay ended up in the best way possible – with a standing ovation in front of a fully packed Vysočina Arena. All of the members have agreed that the atmosphere was outstanding. “It was huge, similar to when we competed,” said Veronika Vítková. “It was intense, I felt the energy from the crowd”, added Eva Puskarčíková. Jitka Landová completed: „Exceptional atmosphere.“ “I don’t have anything else to add, I confirm everything they said,” concluded Gabriela Soukalová.
They all met together again after eight long years. “Normally it is hard to meet, so we are glad that it turned out well,” said Gabi. “We sometimes see each other, but not the whole group,” they all agree.
Winning an Olympic medal is always a special moment in any athlete’s life, even when it takes nine years to finally get it. “When we finished the relay, I remember Gabi saying – I have a feeling that this might not be the end result,” Jitka Landová remembers what Gabriela predicted at that time.
What do the newly-decorated-medalists plan to do with the medals? “I will sell it and donate the proceeds to a charity project. I have two favorites, but we will see„ suggests Soukalová. The remaining trio agrees to add the bronze medal to their collections.
It is safe to say that these were some amazing careers that inspired younger generations to start with biathlon and make it one of the greatest winter sports of recent years in the Czech Republic.
Thank you ladies!
